100 Golden Years
With the Paris 2024 Olympics around the corner, it’s a great time to learn more about Rudy Scholz ’18, J.D. ’20 (that's 1918 and 1920!), who won gold in the 1924 Summer Olympics. The kicker? The 1924 Games were also held in Paris. Get excited for this year’s Olympiad by learning more about how this alumnus helped the US rugby team turn in a miracle medal run!

Welcome to the Family
In June, we finished welcoming the Class of 2024 to the family. Nearly 1,500 new undergraduates joined the ranks of Bronco alumni, as well as students from many graduate programs. Martin J. Jenkins ’77 delivered a touching undergraduate commencement address and reminded the students that the SCU Alumni Association and all of our “talented, committed, and knowledgeable” alumni are waiting to help them on their journey!
Hitting the Right Note
Artist and Class of 2024 valedictorian Simon Lanzoni ’24 found his passion at the intersection of sound and sculpture. He bettered SCU through his efforts to create a student gallery exhibition space, but what message did he want to share with his class?
Paving the Way
Also among this year’s graduating class was Sarahi Espinoza Salamanca ’24, a trailblazer who became the first person in her family to graduate from college. And she’s on to big things after commencement, too! She’s pursuing a master’s degree and hopes to someday run for public office. Let’s give her and all of our other new SCU alumni a big Bronco cheer!
Shining Bright
A background in public relations and marketing set Jackie Bright ’15, MBA ’18 up for a role as director of brand programs and sponsorships at Arctic Wolf, a cybersecurity firm. Learn how support from the Bronco Network helped Jackie forge connections and how she aims to give back.
Bringing Heart to Healthcare
Alumni, students, and professors are working together at SCU’s Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation to make healthcare a more humane industry. Broncos such as Nick Cmager ’23, M.S. ’24, Renceh Flojo ’23, Joy Ku ’23, Soraya Miremadi ’24, and Sofia Molina Perez ’23 are making their mark one experiment at a time.

Eye on the Prize
It's time to showcase your creativity! SCU is hosting the 2024 Opus Prize award ceremony this fall, and the campus needs your artistic talents to help the celebration. Submissions may include—but are not limited to—poems, paintings, musical compositions, illustrations, graphic art, photography, and more. Need some inspiration? Head over to the information page for some prompts. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 1, 2024.
Challenge Accepted
Santa Clara University was named one of four winners of the 2024 William T. Grant Foundation Institutional Challenge Grant, which aims to reduce inequality in youth outcomes. At SCU, the three-year, $650,000 award will support college preparation, persistence, and completion for Latinx students. Congratulations, Santa Clara!
In Memoriam
In June, we lost two beloved Santa Clara instructors. Fern Silva was the digital cinema facility manager and lab instructor in the Department of Communication at the College of Arts and Sciences. He served SCU for more than 20 years, often accompanied by his dog, Glossie. His warmth and willingness to help students will be missed.
We also mourn the passing of Richard Rodgers, a University advisor and a founding member of the Drahmann Center. Rodgers advised countless students throughout his tenure, and was also a prolific artist whose works are visible across campus. We thank Fern and Richard for their years of service and many fond memories.
