Mark Purdy, the award-winning retired San Jose Mercury News columnist, has co-authored a new heavily illustrated book about San Francisco 49ers history that includes plenty of Santa Clara University connections. The book covers every decade of the 49ers' epic timeline and begins in 1928 when two Santa Clara freshmen first met on the campus lawn and began tossing a football to each other as they talked about a fantasy of having their own team one day. Sixteen years later, they made their dream come true--and then hired Buck Shaw, the Broncos' head coach, as the first 49er head coach. This launched an eight-decade journey to the current day, with the Niners playing home games in Levi's Stadium, a short drive from campus. Purdy's book will be for sale and he'll sign copies at the Bronco Boardwalk event, just steps from where those two Santa Clara freshmen birthed the idea of what has become the Bay Area's most popular professional sports team.

While the times change, some traditions remain the same, especially with the Santa Clara Broncos! This glimpse at Santa Clara University student life highlights the consistency of campus activities: sports, band, theater, yearbook and social events. What has clearly changed are demographics as Santa Clara became co-ed in 1961 and continued to grow more diverse in other ways too. The exhibit celebrates student life with yearbooks, memorabilia, photographs and other materials that document the Santa Clara experience from the 1940s to today.
