Get in the holiday spirit with Megan Schiel ’16 and Annie Cameron ’20 as they walk you through making Megan’s family holiday beverage! Did you know wassail was originally enjoyed during an ancient English tradition called wassailing? This entailed either singing door-to-door or visiting orchards to promote a bountiful harvest in the coming year.
Schiel Family Wassail Recipe
(pronounced wah-suhl)
Ingredients:
8 cups apple cider
2 cups orange juice
¾ cup pineapple juice
⅓ cup lemon juice
2 cinnamon sticks
½ cup sugar
1 apple
12 whole cloves
Optional: allspice, nutmeg, spirits
Steps:
- Add the juices, sugar, and cinnamon sticks to a large pot.
- Poke the cloves into the apple and add the apple to the pot.
- Spice it up however you’d like! Feel free to add a dash of nutmeg and allspice.
- Simmer for at least 15 minutes, but do not boil.
- Note: The longer you simmer, the stronger the flavors will be.
- Ladle into cups or mugs and enjoy!
Daily Advent Reflection: Ignatius called us to be people for and with others. Who could you be with today, perhaps with whom to even make a holiday drink?
