In winter 2016, the chapter proposed to the Faculty Senate Council to endorse a request to the UCC to establish an ombuds task force to study the advisability of employing a university ombuds officer. The rationale is that such an officer could help faculty resolve disputes with each other or with administrators before conflicts escalate into formal disputes. The resolution passed, and a task force was formed, producing a report in April 2017. The administration responded:
The existing dispute resolution channels for reporting and resolution of disputes at SCU have been documented and will be added on the Provost's website in the next couple of months. Elsa Chen, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, is currently acting in an ombuds role and the Provost's Office is piloting an effort to engage neutral third parties to resolve conflicts.
Unsatisfied with the administration's decision, the AAUP chapter developed a resolution in April 2018 to advance the ombuds officer proposal.
