The Provost's Office in 2014 initiated a review of intellectual property policies in the Faculty Handbook to update them in light of new legal and technological developments. The chapter is particularly concerned about contract language the University is using to establish its ownership of faculty teaching materials developed for online and hybrid courses. At the moment, these courses are taught primarily by contingent faculty in the summer sessions, along with a handful of graduate faculty, so there is not widespread awareness of the issues on the part of voting members of the Faculty Senate. We will use this page to keep track of efforts in the Faculty Affairs Committee and the Faculty Senate to update the IP policy.
Please see the related page on Intellectual Property on our chapter blog, where we keep track of stories about online education and intellectual property rights of faculty course designers and instructors.
