Aaron (with a little help from Eva Blanco and Christine Garvale) shared the new Undergraduate Admission site with the group. It uses the Level 3 home page layout and a Responsive Design template making it mobile ready. The old site had over 1,000 pages, images, and documents. The new site, which was built from scratch, has around 100 pages, images, docs. The site structure is considerably cleaner, using the best practice of organizing content within sub-sites.

Aaron also highlighted custom features developed for the site... a new layout for the Flickr slide show element (Top 10, Regional Attractions), a Find Your Counselor map interface/database, and a Book Your Visit calendar.

Aaron noted that the site development and build was a team effort, with contributions from Christine Garvale, Pat Dutcher, Eva Blanco, Margaret Avritt, and Brian Washburn.

There were a good number of questions from the group! Thanks again to Aaron for his presentation.

Current Templates and Responsive Design

Brian talked about how the Undergraduate Admission site is using a new template that's adaptive, making any pages created using it mobile ready. He unveiled a Custom Properties setting that allows Site Admins to apply the same feature to the current template, with caveats.

The new setting will make pages wider, and the 599 pixel wide banner currently used will not work - in fact, it will disappear when you switch to the new format. You'll need to create a new 700 pixel wide banner.

Making the change is not difficult and you can try this yourself, but I'm recommending that you see how it behaves by changing the setting at the page level to experiment. Not all Commonspot elements will work in this Responsive Design (RD) template, so you can count on making adjustments as you experiment.

Here's how:

Login to CMS > go to a page you'd like to change > Work on this Page > Properties > Custom... > click the 'Format' tab > select the '2013 Base Template' radio button > Save

Remember, you can always switch back to the '2007 Base Template' if necessary.

This would be extremely useful for pages meant for your mobile audience, like event listings, schedules, or online forms.

If you have any questions about implementation, please feel free to contact Russ Morris.
