Mobile Site Prototype Development

The development of the first SCU Mobile Web application was based on the following:

  • Device independence - The site will be accessible on any mobile device that included a minimally functional Web browser.
  • Content reuse - Site content will be collected from existing sources, using standard methods of integration such as syndication via RSS and Web Service APIs.
  • Flexible presentation - The application will respond to the characteristics of the client request and return a presentation optimized for the device.

The initial prototype for the SCU Mobile site is designed for two classes of mobile devices; feature phones and touch phones.  The main differences between the two types are screen size, user interface controls, and mobile browser capabilities.  The text content delivered to both devices is essentially the same - image content is directed primarily to touch phones.  Here's a side-by-side comparison:

Feature Phone

Designed for 160-240 pixel width window.

Content is accessible without CSS and Javascript.

Lists are navigable by access keys, to minimize scrolling.

Images aren't included with news content.

Touch Phone

Designed for vertical or horizontal layout, will use 100% of the available window width in either position.

Uses CSS for presentation and semantic HTML to organize content.  Javascript is used minimally, and the site is navigable with scripting disabled (an exception: Google Maps integration with the campus map does depend on Javascript).

The user interface design is based on Apple iPhone UI guidlines.
