Santa Clara University - Undergraduate Admission

Danielle Wenzel

Senior Associate Director

I'm originally from the Napa Valley area of California. I attended Santa Clara University, graduating with a BSc in marketing and then later with an MBA in Leading People and Organizations and Food and Agribusiness. I have been working for the Undergraduate Admission Office since 2006 and look forward to working with you.

1. How do you define a great application?
Strong Academics + Personality = Impressive. First and foremost, a great applicant will have the necessary academic foundation to succeed at SCU. Then the ability to showcase who you are outside of your duties as a student will set you apart from the rest. Be interesting, engaging, and present unique qualities you will bring to SCU. Remember to put time and effort into your application and research the university; there is nothing worse than going through an application that is barely filled out with 1 sentence responses. Think of the application as your first impression--it matters!

Personal Statement Tip: Do not give me a play-by-play (do not be too narrative). Pick the key facts then add insight and personal perspective to show me why it's IMPORTANT to you. Do not be afraid to ask yourself the question, "Why is this important for Admissions to know?" when proofing your essay.

2. What inspires your work?
I have a strong belief in the importance and value of continuing one's education which inspires me to work in higher education. My passion for Santa Clara University and the amazing opportunities students have here causes me to work at SCU. My desire to improve access to higher education for all students drives me to work in Admissions specifically.

3. What do you do in your spare time?
Although I'm a "girly girl" at first glance, I'm a closet geek who's into technology, data crunching, social media, and the Web. After work I turn into a sports fanatic. You can catch me at a variety of sporting events depending on the season. LET'S GO SHARKS! GO A'S! GO NINERS! And of course, GO SCU BRONCOS!

4. What is your favorite song?
I don't think I will ever have a hands down favorite song. I have a very eclectic taste in music--ask my colleagues. I like everything from indie rock to top 40/pop, R&B, Rap, classic rock, Spanish rock, and yes, even a "lil' bit country." I'm a bit of a romantic, so some of my favorite songs are ballads. Who can honestly get tired of Elton John's "Your Song"? Or who could resist the urge to belt out Whitney's high notes in "I Will Always Love You" while driving in the car? My taste in music depends on my mood. If you hear "Livin' On a Prayer" by Bon Jovi blaring in my cube it's safe to say I'm in a good mood. On the other hand if you hear Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" or anything by Kelly Clarkson I'm probably feeling a little sassy. If you hear "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey I'm feeling nostalgic, which isn't to be confused with when I play anything by Muse (my go-to emotional angst artist). When I'm feeling playful you'll hear songs like "Algo Me Gusta De Ti" by Wisin & Yandel, Outkast's "Hey Ya" or anything by Matt & Kim. Do not disturb me if you hear "Don't You Worry Child" or anything else by Swedish House Mafia as I am most likely in my work groove. All joking aside, no matter what song I'm listening to or what mood I'm in, talking about SCU tends to brighten up my day, so feel free to contact me!
