Keep Leading Zeros in a Mail Merge

If you are doing a Mail Merge and your Excel data has leading zeros, such as a SCUID number, you'll notice that the zeros disappear in the merge. You can do one of two things to fix this:

  • Add the zeros in your Word document right before the merge field.
  • Open your data in Excel and format the cells as text: go to Format > Cells > Number tab, choose Text. This will remove the zeros, so manually add them back in the cells.

The first option works for large data sets where manually changing the cells would take too much time. If you only have a few cells, you can try the second option.
