Length of SCU Employment: In this role: 5+ months; however, this is my 10^th year at SCU (I worked in Athletics from ’91 to ’99)
Born & Lived: Born in Indianapolis, IN; moved to Bay Area when I was 3
Early Life: Grew up in Cupertino & Fremont; went to high school at Mission San Jose in Fremont and college at Butler University in Indianapolis
Family: wife Judy (age withheld); kids Lucy (9) & Brady (6)
Most Meaningful Achievement:
~ Personal: convincing my wife that I was marriage material, which led to two great kids (and I hope to help them have meaningful achievements)
~ Professional: successfully generating revenue in the sports & media & collegiate industries for 20+ years
~ Community: coaching my son’s Little League team; raising money and awareness for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through Team in Training.
Why I came to SCU: it’s a magical place with great people and great potential; if we as a campus community can set aside our issues/egos and be more selfless and work together better, there is no limit to what this great university can achieve!
Previous Employer: San Francisco 49ers (worked there for 6 years)
In 5 years I Plan to Be: 5 years older. That and hopefully I’m not going crazy with a teenage daughter. I’d also like to be successfully building relationships, driving revenue and leading a team of people to succeed.
Favorite Books/Series: Fiction – Harlan Coben, Clive Cussler; Business – I’m re-reading Dale Carnegie books right now; other Non-Fiction – I enjoy biographies of a successful people in a variety of industries.
In My Spare Time: I enjoy coaching my son’s Little League team, running (support my Team in Training effort here: http://pages.teamintraining.org/sf/AveGiant12/wmchargue ) and golf (wish I had more time for this!) Other than my kids’ activities, other passions/interests are Butler Basketball, the San Jose Sharks, Starbucks, traveling, eating out at restaurants, the NFL, Modern Family, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Mad Men. And I enjoy following all Bronco athletic teams.

SCU Staff Community Service Day

Come join us in a family friendly volunteer event for all ages on Saturday, April 21, 2012! The staff senate, in partnership with Alumni Relations, is sponsoring a first ever SCU Community Service Day. This is an opportunity for the entire SCU community to work together. ALL interested students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to participate in this one day of community service event. Your friends and family members are welcome too! As a group representing Santa Clara University, volunteers will be able to pick from a list of organized activities provided by participating community organizations. These include:

Park Clean Up
Alum Rock Park
Farm/Gardening
Bronco Urban Garden - SCU's on campus garden The Forge
Full Circle Farm
Community Organizations
Sacred Heart Community Service Center

Most of the organizations offer activities for all ages. A few have a minimum age requirement due to a safety concern about the activity.

Service projects will be completed during the morning and all participating volunteers are invited to a sponsored lunch, served by Bon Appetit, being held in the Donohoe Alumni Gardens at 1:30 p.m. that day.

We already have several people signed up but have room for several more!

Donate your old cell phones and accessories!

The Staff Senate has been collaborating with Alumni Relations in a cell phone drive that benefits Next Door Solutions which promotes safety for battered women and their children. The SCU community helps by donating unwanted cell phones and accessories (working or not). Phones are recycled in an environmentally-safe and responsible manner, with proceeds benefitting essential support programs, including emergency shelters. Here's how it works - Next Door Solutions has a non-profit recycling partner, Shelter Alliance, who pays them for used, unwanted cell phones. They pay Next Door anywhere from 50 cents to $100 (no, that's not a typo) per phone. They can even accept iphones, blackberries and androids. Shelter Alliance even pays for the shipping, so it costs the Next Door organization nothing. Phones and their accessories can be dropped off any time at the Alumni Relations office reception desk located in Donohoe Alumni House.

St. Patricks Day Homesafe Celebration Highlights

The St. Patrick's Day Celebration at the San Jose Home Safe shelter was successful. Children and Mothers who attended had a great time. Volunteers also enjoyed themselves and helped with all of the following events:

Greeting with hats and whistles (green of course)
Games and activities:
Fishing for prizes
Bean Bag Throw with prizes
Cupcake decorating
Craft project for both children and Mom's
Picture taking with Mr. Giant Leprechaun (picture was given to Mom's to include in their craft
St. Patrick's Day washable tattoos
Singing and dancing
Smiling and Laughing

The shelter is thankful to all their friends at Santa Clara University!

Special thanks to all who volunteered and were able to donate towards the event.

Holiday Party and Donation Highlights

Approximately 700 attended the holiday party on Dec. 14th. There were carolers, prizes, beautiful decorations and a traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings.

A Message from Fred Smith, Staff Senate President

Welcome back to what will undoubtedly be a successful academic year. As a staff member here at Santa Clara for 7 years, I’ve been fortunate to see lots of positive change within the Mission Campus. I appreciate being here and embracing the Jesuit ideals of educating the whole person and serving others. As staff members we can have a huge impact on the Santa Clara student experience. As the President of the Staff Senate, I’m here to make sure we as employees have input regarding our own Santa Clara experience.

This year the Staff Senate is focusing on communication. Through this newsletter, our webpage, and the actions of your representatives, we will work to keep staff abreast of issues including benefits, WASC accreditation, the University Master Plan, SCU’s capacity study, and the next fundraising campaign. These areas will all impact our daily jobs and help Santa Clara to continue to prepare current and future students for life.
