Off-Campus Energy Competition
Living Green in the Neighborhood, Santa Clara University's first energy-saving competition for students living off-campus, is off to a strong start. With about ten houses participating, the competition, co-sponsored by the Office of Sustainability and Associated Students, will award its first prizes at the beginning of the second week of April. Prizes will go to the two houses which have reduced their energy consumption the most during the month of March, as compared to their per capita use in February. Participating houses can check their progress on the competition's web site here, as well as find tips on how to save energy and water. Stay tuned for the monthly winners!
AASHE Sustainability Awards
Have you, or someone you know made outstanding efforts in the arena of sustainability at Santa Clara? AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education would like to recognize such individuals with their 2010 AASHE Sustainability Awards! There are three categories of awards that will be given. The Student Sustainability Leadership Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in promoting sustainability on the SCU campus and includes a $750 prize. As of March 27, Santa Clara wrapped up its 4th year as a participant in the nation-wide Recyclemania competition. Throughout the ten weeks of the contest, Santa Clara recycled a total of 113,249 pounds of glass, aluminum, plastics #1-7, paper, and cardboard. A successful waste characterization was held in conjunction with the competition. The results of the data collected indicated that students have significantly improved on properly recycling important items like e-waste and universal waste. Within the next several weeks, the Recyclemania organization will post final results for all participating colleges and universities. Track Santa Clara's progress at the Recyclemania web site.
