  •  Residence Life Eats Up Compostable Diningware

    Residence Life at Santa Clara University recently dished out a new initiative chalk full of sustainability - quite literally. Residential Learning Communities began replacing plastic utensils and disposable cups and plates at programming events last spring with biocompostable tableware. The renewed effort reveals a potential to reduce waste and boost compost collection across campus.

    For Santa Clara students, the first few weeks of June often bring the tragic collision of warm weather and finals. Mix in move out, and June becomes an all-out sprint to finish classes, catch up with friends, take advantage of sunny days and pack up your life. But in the rush of it all, students this year made a point to slow down and give back, and set a record for donations in the process.

    Each year, Facilities, Housing, the GREEN Club, and the Office of Sustainability team up to help campus residents reduce waste during Move-Out in June. This year, even more organizations are joining in the effort.

    This is Santa Clara's fourth year competing in the RecycleMania: a nationwide friendly competition between colleges and universities to promote recycling awareness and reduce campus waste. The competition is a ten-week period that runs from January 17 through March 27.
