SCU Named to the 2012 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
Santa Clara has been named to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service. This is the sixth consecutive year that Santa Clara has received the recognition for our support of volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. From July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011, SCU faculty, staff and students have contributed over 119,000 hours of service, a sign of our institutional commitment to community service. We hold the culture of service as a fundamental value that helps define who we are as an institution. Being named to the President's Honor Roll affirms the depth and breadth of that commitment across campus.

Santa Clara's Information Services Division is Collecting iPads

Do you have an outdated iPad or iPad 2 and are looking to donate it to a good cause? The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) is a sponsor of a joint program with the Jesuit Refugee Service to begin post-secondary education at three refugee locations in Kakuma, Kenya; Dzaleka, Malawi; and Deir Vartan, Syria. These two organizations have partnered to set up computer classrooms in all three of these locations and are actively teaching classes and using onsite local proctors and course materials prepared by professors at several AJCU schools.

IPads are being collected because books for students in these locations are incredibly expensive, but ebooks are a cheap alternative. Santa Clara's Information Services Division is collecting iPads to be donated to support these education efforts. If you would like to donate a working iPad or iPad2, in good condition with a power adapter, you can drop it off in the Learning Commons, either at the circulation desk on the first floor or at the IT Service Center on the third floor. You will receive a gift acknowledgment from Santa Clara in recognition of your donation.

University Library Requests Donations for Annual Book Sale

The University Library is requesting donations of books, videos, DVDs, CDs, and audiotapes from faculty and staff for its annual Book Sale. Please indicate your name on the box/bag and that the items are for the Book Sale. Please also note how many items are included. For every 5 items donated, you will receive a coupon good for 1 free item during the Book Sale. The Book Sale will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., in the Arcade at the entrance to the Learning Commons. The Book Sale will be held in partnership with Friends of African Village Libraries (FAVL), who will receive 100% of the proceeds from the sale.

Tunnel of Oppression

The 5th Annual Tunnel of Oppression, "Expressions of Oppression in Our World," is co-sponsored by the Center for Student Leadership and the Office of Multicultural Learning. The Tunnel of Oppression is an interactive program that highlights contemporary issues of oppression in its various forms. The program is designed to introduce participants to the concepts of oppression, privilege, and power as well as educate and challenge them to think more deeply about related issues. Innovate Impact Conference

Net Impact/Sustainable Business Studies Club and the Center for Science, Technology & Society are hosting an Innovate Impact Conference with speaker John Denniston. The schedule for the event is as follows:

5:45-­6:45 pm: “Speed” informational interviews, CA Mission Room. Gain valuable insight into the future of sustainable careers through “Speed” informational interviews with Sustainability Directors in industry leaders such as Genentech, SAP, Applied Materials, and many more!

7:00­-8:00 pm: John Denniston, Williman Room. Learn about the exciting business of Venture Capital and the challenges/opportunities in the Greentech industry.

Greenhorns Documentary Screening

Dining Services by Bon Appetit and the Food and Agribusiness Institute are hosting a special screening of "The Greenhorns" and speaker panel. Greenhorns is a documentary about young farmers in America. It is a 50-minute story about their spirit, practices, and needs. This relevant work is the result of 3 years of hard effort, 500 hours of footage and participation of start-up entrepreneurs around the country working on their dreams to feed others. There will also be a speaker panel of young farmers discussing what they do and their background and general outlook regarding being a young and/or start-up farmer.

SCU Community Service Day

The staff senate, in partnership with Alumni Services, is sponsoring the first-ever SCU Community Service Day. All interested students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to participate in this one day of community service event. Friends and family members are welcome too! As a group representing SCU, volunteers will be able to pick from a list of organized activities provided by participating community organizations. These include:

Most of the organizations offer activities for all ages. A few may have a minimum age requirement due to a safety concern about the activity. Service projects will be completed during the morning and all participating volunteers are invited to a lunch being held in the Donohoe Alumni Gardens at 1:30 p.m. that day. The film "Vincent Who?" captures a catalyst moment in U.S. history that forged the pan-Asian American identity and Civil Rights movement. In 1982, when anti-Japanese sentiment was high due to massive layoffs in the U.S. automotive industry, two white autoworkers crossed paths with Vincent Chin, a Chinese-American man, who was celebrating his bachelor party in a Detroit bar. They berated him for taking their jobs and after following him out, beat him to death. They were set free with a $3,000 fine and no jail time. This is a “film about the murder that awakened and ignited the Asian American civil rights movement”. For more information, click here.
