 Did You Know?

Continuing their pursuit of sustainable initiatives on campus, the Department of Athletics and Recreation has recently joined the Green Sports Alliance, a non-profit network of sport teams, venues, and leagues around the United States who are making strides to improve sustainability in the sports industry. The Alliance represents over 220 collegiate and professional sports teams from 16 different leagues. Namely, these teams’ executives work with environmental scientists to tailor better practices and solutions for stadiums that attract thousands of people each year. They host annual tours around the United States, continually publish highlights of the different initiatives, and provide the structure for sustainable collaboration in the athletics industry. Upon Santa Clara University (SCU) joining the alliance in December of 2013, Dan Coonan, Director of Athletics and Recreation, expressed enthusiasm for the new partnership: "We are excited to be a member of the Green Sports Alliance and be able to use their network of resources to help us continue to educate our student athletes, department staff, recreational facility users and Bronco fans." This summer, Green Sports Alliance will be showcasing SCU, leading a tour of the Malley Center and Leavey Center. The tour will highlight some of Malley Center’s sustainable features such as dual flush toilets, water bottle filling stations, motion sensors, and waste diversion systems.
