Santa Clara University disposed of only 747 tons of landfill in 2014, compared to 1,323 tons in 2011. That's a 44% reduction in landfill in three years! Find out how, where, and what to put in landfill on and off campus.
What is considered landfill on campus?
At Santa Clara University, our main priority to is reduce and divert as much waste as possible. There are very few items, however, that cannot be recycled or composted on campus. Please place the following items in the landfill bins:
- Non-paper packaging: Chip bags, candy & energy bar wrappers, condiment packets, and butter wrappers.
- Non-SCU disposable containers: Cups & take-out containers acquired off-campus, Styrofoam, and dirty aluminum foil.
Note about recycling energy bar wrappers
Campus Recreation began collecting energy bar wrappers in 2013 for recycling with Terracycle. The Terracycle collection programs, or brigades, also include writing instruments, paired shoes, and personal beauty products. Bring your wrappers and more to the blue collection bins located in the main lobby of Pat Malley Fitness and Recreation Center. Learn more.
