Sustainability Summer Series
The Sustainability Summer Series is a chance to learn more about SCU’s sustainability programs. Each session is 1-hour on Wednesdays throughout the summer and involves a behind-the-scenes view of a specific campus initiative.
Sessions may explore initiatives such as SCU’s waste stream, landscaping/water, housing & residence life, campus recreation, the Forge Garden, dining services, and renewable energy initiatives.
Added to this year's series by request is meeting the most recent members of the Center for Sustainability, the Provost's Office Faculty Associates for Sustainability. Get an inside scoop on SCU's approach to sustainability in academics and hear from the Faculty Associate for Curriculum Development and Transformation, John Farnsworth, and the Faculty Associate for Academic Programs, Leslie Gray, about their work, including the Penstemon Project, teaching resources, the Sustainability Pathway, SLURP, and future academic endeavors.
SCU has had an award-winning few months this past academic year! We received Gold in AASHE's Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) and won Acterra's Environmental Business Award for Sustainability - Large Organization. What does this mean and what effect does it have on our campus? Hear how SCU improved from our Silver STARS rating in 2011 and what further improvements our campus is doing to reach our sustainability goals. In this session, you'll also find out--before the public--about which accolade we are receiving next!
Learn about SCU's energy efficiency programs and our plans for reaching carbon neutrality by the end of 2015 from Joe Sugg, Assistant Vice President of University Operations. You'll hear about the campus' micro-grid, exterior lighting upgrade, and can get up-close-and-personal to our rooftop solar. This session is limited to 15 participants.
Receive a brief tour of the Forge Garden, pick vegetables for the farm stand, and experience the sampling, washing/ prepping, and the behind-the-scenes insight into a working urban garden.

Ever wonder where your recycling, compostables, and landfill items go? Tour the Facilities Yard and see how SCU processes roughtly 5 tons a day. Get your questions answered by participating in a hands-on waste characterization (optional, but encouraged!).
Discover how Campus Recreation, led by Director of Campus Recreation Janice DeMonsi, is leading the way in implementing sustainability in the athletics and recreation sector. You'll learn about their zero-waste goal, Terracycle brigades, the "Powered by Sweat" program, and the pilot of the latest carbon offset initiative, the Hoofprint Challenge.
See the sustainable features of Graham Hall and learn about Housing's waste diversion programs. Learn about Residence Life initiatives including CF Sustainability Liaisons and programs to encourage energy-saving behaviors among residents. Hear about new initiatives upcoming for the 2014-15 academic year.
With Charles Lewis, 10-11 am, Meet at Benson Memorial Center, hallway in front of Parlor ALearn about vegetarian and vegan dining options as well as pre- and post-consumer food waste composting and recycling. Find out more about the eco-tray program and why Dining Services by Bon Appetit is a leader regarding social, environmental, and economic implications of our food choices. New for 2014: Tour our kitchen and learn about the new food donation program!
Learn how the culture of sustainability is growing at SCU. This conversational session will feature examples of people across the campus who are integrating sustainability into their work/life at SCU. Stories from the Leavey School of Business, Athletics, the Law School, the School of Engineering, student organizations, and more, should inspire you to find easy ways to help SCU build a more humane, just, and sustainable world.
