Financing Your Study Abroad Program
Santa Clara students can use 100% of their University aid (scholarships, federal, state, private, loans, etc) towards study abroad. If cost is still a factor, students can apply for some of the following scholarships and grants available specifically to fund international educational opportunities. With a little work and time, students can secure additional funding for their program including from the following sources:

National Security Education Program
The National Security Education Program (NSEP) offers a significant number of merit-based scholarships, intended primarily to support the development of expertise in less commonly taught languages, cultures and areas important to U.S. national security (i.e. excluding Western Europe, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia). The goal of NSEP is to increase international opportunities for U.S. citizens enrolled in institutions of higher education at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Freeman - ASIA Program
The Freeman-ASIA Program aims to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia by providing students with the information and financial assistance they will need. Awards will range from $3,000-$7,000 depending on the length of the study abroad experience. Awardees will be expected to share their experiences with their home campus to encourage study abroad by others, and to spread understanding of Asia in their home communities. Deadlines are early. Gilman Scholarship Program
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is enables students who have limited financial means to participate in study abroad opportunities worldwide. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue semester or academic-year long study abroad opportunities in other countries. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships
The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships are awarded each year by the Rotary clubs all around the world. They enable students to spend an academic year studying abroad in a country, which there are Rotary clubs. Rotary International is seeking students with strong academic records who would benefit personally, professionally, and academically from studying overseas. Applicants should have strong leadership skills, be interested in service, and make good "international ambassadors." You need to start early for this application process (freshman year) as it takes time. Awards up to $23,000 for the academic year and covers tuition, room and board, and transportation. Bridging Scholarship
The Bridging Scholarship is for American undergraduate students studying in Japan majoring in any field of study. Japanese language background is not a requirement. Awards range from $2500 to $4000, depending on length of program.

Florence Sister County Commission Scholarship Program
The County of Santa Clara and the Province of Florence have a Sister County relationship that promotes intercultural and educational exchanges between these regions. Every year the Commission offers scholarships up to $3,000 to San Jose State University, Stanford University, and Santa Clara University students who are participating in an academic year in a University approved international program in Florence, Italy.
