---What were the deciding factors in choosing your study abroad program-location?---
I always knew I wanted to study in a country where I could practice my Spanish. However, I also saw studying abroad as an opportunity to travel throughout Europe, an experience none of my family members have ever been able to do. Barcelona, a city with a major airport and easy access to other European countries, offered me the opportunity to travel to Germany, France, Greece, the Czech Republic, and other areas of Spain.

---What have you learned from your study abroad experiences that have contributed to your personal, vocational, or academic growth?---
Studying abroad helped me grow a lot in my independence. Having to travel and figure out simple directions or public transportation systems are not so simple when everything and everyone around you speaks a foreign language. I learned to rely on my own perseverance and stay calm, even if I was lost in a country much different from home. Also, I discovered a deep interest I have for learning about new cultures. Going on vacation to a beautiful country is a wonderful opportunity, but experiencing a culture while being a part of the community is an indescribable experience. I gained a whole new outlook on my life as a citizen of the United States, and how people in other countries view our nation, as well.

---What advises, recommendations would you give to prospective study abroad students? In retrospect, how would you prepare differently to maximize the study abroad experience?---
My main advice in the pre-departure stage is to not question your decision. The choice to study abroad is probably one of the best decisions a student can ever make in his or her life. It is alright to be nervous. However, don't allow that fear to make you pessimistic or have negative expectations. Enter your host country with an open mind, open eyes, open ears, and an open heart. You'll miss your family and friends. You'll miss home. It's true. Nevertheless, you'll realize it's all more than worth it the first time you're walking down the street in your host country and realize that this place is your new home.
