Social Security Number

The Social Security Office will no longer issue social security numbers for any purpose except work. If you are offered a job on campus, you need to request that the potential employer to give you a job offer letter (letter of intent to hire). The letter should state your position, where (name of department or office) you are employing on campus, and some of your responsibilities.

You will also need a letter to apply for a social security number from International Students & Scholars (ISS). Bring your job offer letter to ISS. It takes approximately 2 to 3 days to process this letter. When the letter is ready, you will be contacted by email to come for pick up. We will also provide a sheet with instructions about the next step of the process to getting your social security number.

Please do not request a letter if you do not plan to work on or off campus. Unfortunately, the advisors cannot support your request if your purpose is for a driver's license or to open a bank account.
