Based at Santa Clara University, in the heart of the Silicon Valley, the Global Social Benefit Institute (GSBI®) supports social entrepreneurs who are developing innovative solutions to the problems of poverty. We support these entrepreneurs at every stage of their organizations’ lifecycle through in-depth mentoring, instruction in best business practices, and connection to impact investors. We do this all at no cost to the SEs. GSBI believes innovation and entrepreneurship provide a sustainable path out of poverty.

Launched in 2003, the Global Social Benefit Institute (GSBI®) at Santa Clara University is a pioneer in the field of social-enterprise capacity development. Originally conceived as a social- enterprise incubator, GSBI has evolved to offer its current portfolio of differentiated programs that serve start-up, early-stage, and mid-stage enterprises. Each GSBI program features structured curriculum and customized executive mentoring.

Since its launch, GSBI has worked with more than 340 social enterprises, and anticipates working directly with more than one hundred per year annually, in addition to hundreds more through its GSBI Network partners. These 340 social enterprises are based in more than 55 countries, have raised US$96 million in funding after completing a GSBI program, and have directly benefited the lives of more than 107 million people.

For social entrepreneurs who want a sustainable impact model and business model, GSBI is an integrated capacity development platform designed for entrepreneurs dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing issues. Unlike other incubators and accelerators, GSBI provides development stage- specific programs, full lifecycle support, and rigorous, mentored programs that enable increased impact.

What We Do

GSBI believes innovation and entrepreneurship provide a path out of poverty. We build the capacity of entrepreneurs dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing issues. Executive mentorship combined with structured curriculum are the foundation of our theory of change.

Based in the heart of Silicon Valley at Santa Clara University, we combine Silicon Valley acumen with a drive to eradicate poverty and support social entrepreneurs around the world through their entire lifecycle. GSBI offers several distinct, development stage-specific capacity development programs for social entrepreneurs as well as ongoing support for alumni. Each program involves high engagement among entrepreneurs, Silicon Valley mentors, and program staff.

GSBI’s vision is twofold: to help social entrepreneurs develop their organizational capacities as efficiently as possible, and to grow their enterprise in a sustainable way. GSBI welcomes applicants with non-profit, for-profit, or hybrid business models.

After a decade of experimentation, GSBI has validated its capacity-development methodology and is scaling up its programs to serve more social enterprises on a yearly basis. The success of GSBI’s programs can be traced to three factors:

● A discovery and selection process that uses validated criteria to identify high-potential social-enterprise leaders whose organizations are able to benefit from a GSBI program.

● A diversity of targeted programs that provide stage-appropriate capacity development, enabling social enterprises to develop and present effective, fundable business models while also measuring social impacts.

● Structured curriculum combined with customized mentoring by experienced Silicon Valley executives and entrepreneurs who are carefully selected and trained, enabling successful navigation of nuanced cross-cultural communication.

The GSBI was founded in 2003 as the Global Social Benefit Incubator. It was renamed in 2012 to reflect an expansion of programs. Read more about the origin and history of the GSBI.
