Story in the College of Arts & Sciences
Allie Dunne '09
Individual studies major walks off the beaten path and designs a curriculum combining economics with health issues.
Allie Dunne is thankful that she was able to design her own curriculum at Santa Clara.
Not entirely sure of her academic direction when she arrived as a freshman from Los Angeles, Dunne ended up studying global cultural studies through the individual studies program. Her self-directed curriculum incorporated economics, political science, gender studies, Spanish studies, and health issues.
For her senior thesis, Dunne spent time in El Salvador researching the effect of the coffee growing and selling industry on quality of life for women workers.
"I looked at health, migration, education, and gender equality as factors. Two years ago, I never would have imagined myself doing something like that," she says.
