James W. Reites, S.J.

Associate Professor, Department of Religious Studies
Faculty Director, Xavier

Father Reites joined the Santa Clara University faculty in 1975. His research interests range from theology and feminism to St. Ignatius and the early history of the Jesuits in Spain and Italy.

Born in New Orleans, Professor Reites' studies led him to a range of places and interests: Loyola University of Los Angeles for engineering and math, Immaculate Heart College for vocal and choral music, Santa Clara University for classics and the humanities, and finally St. Louis University, where he earned his A.B. in philosophy. His MST in theology from Santa Clara University followed, though his coursework included scripture and theology courses from other universities as well (Loyola University of L.A. and the University of San Francisco). Father Reites earned his STL in theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and completed his STD at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

For the last ten years, Father Reites has led annual student immersion trips to Mexico to build houses. He is the faculty director in residence and founder of Xavier Residential Learning Community, one of the student housing/educational groups on campus, and has led Xavier immersion trips to El Salvador as well.
