Felling the tree, 1904. Author Bob Doughtery notes, "It is difficult to appreciate the work of the lumbermen working without modern equipment-a tree had to be felled; barkers trimmed the trees and peeled the bark; bucking the tree involved cutting it into manageable lengths; and logs were gathered at a central place and then transported to a mill to be cut and stacked. Each step required different skills and posed different dangers." Courtesy Bud Foss.
