Michael Gonzalez '50, a community-active resident of Vacaville and Solano County passed away suddenly in Fairfield on Aug. 9, 2013. He was 88 years old.
Mike was born Sept. 28, 1924 in Fairfield, to Miguel and Lucy Gonzalez. He grew up in old town Suisun and later moved with his family to their ranch at Mankas Corner in Fairfield. Mike graduated from Armijo High School in 1943. After serving his country as a United States Marine in the South Pacific and North China during World War II, he attended Santa Clara University. In both high school and college Mike was a standout athlete in football, baseball and tennis.
In 1951, Mike married Mary Chaffee, and they had two children, Katie and Michael. Mary passed away in 1961. Years later, Mike reconnected with Jane Roney, his childhood classmate and high school sweetheart. They married in 1978. While living in Vacaville, Mike managed the California Sample Furniture Company stores in Fairfield and Vacaville. He then opened up his own furniture store, Michael's Home Furnishings in Vacaville. He later sold the store, which is now Shock's Furniture. Mike then moved on to manage Ticor Title until he retired. Mike was active in civic affairs, serving as Vacaville City Councilman and three-time president of the Vacaville Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Solano County Fair Board, the Dixon May Fair Board, the Vacaville Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee and the Travis Regional Armed Forces Committee.
John "Jack" Clarke ’50 passed away peacefully at his Aptos home on Oct 28. Born in Los Gatos and raised in Saratoga, he was 90 years old. Graduated in 1950 at the University of Santa Clara, he received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, followed by a 35 year career with the Santa Clara Valley Water District. Jack was active in the Catholic Church his entire life. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in Europe and was honored with the Bronze Star. Jack is survived by his wife Eleanor of 61 years, and children Richard (Susan), Stephen, John ’79 (Jeanne) and Maureen (Richard), along grandchildren, Bryan, Colin, Kelly, Geoffrey, Genelle, Andy and Heather. Jack also leaves his brother Henry Clarke ’51. Any kind acts of charity may be made in memory of Jack to Santa Clara University
Daniel Joseph Vesely ’50 of Rocklin passed away peacefully on August 12, 2013, with his loving family by his side after suffering from Dementia for several years. He was 89 years young. Daniel was born to Joseph and Minnie Vesely in New York, New York on July 30, 1924. Daniel married his wife Annie Walker to whom he was married to for 65 years. Daniel is survived by younger brother, Joseph Vesely who is living in Massachusetts. He is also survived by his two children Gregory Vesely, Cynthia Gruber and her husband Joe Gruber, two grandchildren Kristel Vesely, Gregory Goodnough and one great-grandson, Jayden Goodnough. Daniel graduated from Santa Clara University with a civil engineering degree in 1950. He worked for several engineering firms over the years which allowed his family to live in Casablanca, where Greg was born and Madrid, Spain where Cynthia was born. He retired with the Federal Government Corp of Engineers. Daniel and Annie raised their children in Rocklin since 1964. He loved his family and friends, enjoyed reading, traveling and was an avid golfer until he became ill. He always enjoyed living on the golf course. We were blessed to have him in our lives and he will be deeply missed.
