Brian Kozel '09 and Ashley Wells '09 were married at the Santa Clara Mission Church on July 14, 2012. Several SCU alumni were in the wedding party, including Joseph Wattoo '09, Ellis Fenske '09, Lauren Backes '09, Christina Harris '09, Tanner Diggs '09, and Adam Seppala '09; as well as current SCU student and brother of the groom, Kevin Kozel '14. Even more SCU alumni were in attendance as guests of the wedding. The couple honeymooned in France and is enjoying the beginning of their life as newlyweds.

Koo, Tae-Woong

Tae-Woong Koo J.D. '09 has been named president of the Korean American Bar Association of Northern California. Koo is an intellectual property attorney at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, based in Palo Alto. Koo's practice focuses on prosecution, protection, enforcement, and monetization of intellectual property rights.

John Kidde ’09 decided to do something crazy and quit his job to take a month-long internship in South Africa. From there he will circle to globe by going to Hong Kong and then meet Sean Murphy ’09 in Tokyo before heading home.

Haley Kaprielian '09 writes, "I moved to Los Angeles, Calif. in Nov. 2012 for a job as an Event Coordinator at Loyola Law School. I plan small events to multi-day conferences for students, alumni, and others in the legal field. I was previously working for the Northern California Innocence Project at Santa Clara School of Law doing marketing and development. No, I do not plan on going to law school. :)"

Hogan, John

John Hogan MBA '09 was recognized as a "Champion of Change” by the White House for being particularly innovative and effective in answering the administration’s Youth Jobs+ challenge. The Youth Jobs+ program was created as a way to engage local elected officials, along with business and community leaders, to work together to connect young people with summer and year-round job opportunities.

The Champions of Change were recognized for helping connect young people with jobs and skills, creating opportunities in communities across this country.
 
John Hogan is the CEO and founder of TeenForce, a San Jose–based nonprofit dedicated to solving the youth employment crisis by meeting the hiring needs of businesses. TeenForce is built on the staffing agency model and provides employers with an opportunity to hire work-ready youth ages 14 –24 while also strengthening local communities. TeenForce delivers work-readiness training, skills development, job placement services, and career mentoring to ensure youth improve life outcomes through their employment experiences. As part of its Youth Jobs+ effort, TeenForce partnered with the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce to generate 100 jobs for current and former foster youth in 2013.
 
Hogan also co-chairs the Opportunity Youth Partnership effort in Santa Clara County as part of a Collective Impact initiative inspired by the White House Council on Community Solutions and the Aspen Institute.

Hanley, Matthew

The Traverse City-based law firm Dingeman & Dancer, PLC has added new attorney Matthew Hanley J.D. '09.
 
Hanley is a TC native, and attended Santa Clara University School of Law in California before moving back to Michigan.
 
He was admitted to the Illinois state bar in 2010, and to the Michigan state bar in 2012. He also has served as an extern for former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Weaver, and as a law clerk for employers including the U.S. Department of Justice and CafePress.
 
Hanley specializes in healthcare law and civil litigation including personal injury, nursing home abuse and wrongful death cases.

Gardner, Caroline

In February 2014, Caroline Gardner ’09 will begin as a senior tax accountant at SRI International, one of the largest contract research institutes in the world. As a nonprofit, SRI is committed to discovery and to the application of science and technology for knowledge, commerce, prosperity, and peace. In her new role, Caroline will be responsible for tax compliance issues across the US and internationally.

Fuller, Luke
Luke Fuller ’09 was one of only 15 recent college graduates in the country selected to serve in the 2011 class of City Hall Fellows, an elite public policy Fellowship program. Mr. Fuller will spend his Fellowship year serving in San Francisco, CA. The 9-member 2011 San Francisco class is a talented and varied group, selected from among 300 candidates nationwide. Fuller has committed to spend 12 months inside a city agency working on high- need, high-impact municipal projects in San Francisco. Simultaneously, Fuller will receive more than 300 hours of proprietary training from City Hall Fellows on civic leadership and the local policy process, through which Fellows explore the history, politics, mechanics and functions of local governance in the Bay Area. City Hall Fellows selected Luke Fuller for its 2011 San Francisco class because of his outstanding leadership capabilities and commitment to public service. Mr. Fuller graduated Santa Clara as a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, and as a Dean’s Award recipient. While at SCU he volunteered with the Santa Clara Community Action Program (SCCAP) and served on the university’s award-winning delegation to the Model UN of the Far West. He was active with the school’s 2007 USDOE Solar Decathlon project that took 2nd place in the national competition in Washington, D.C., and worked with the Department of Political Science in researching U.S. Congressional activity and European democratization.

Chad E. Dupic 09 and Michelle L. Pesce ’09 were married October 19, 2013, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe, N.M. The couple resides in San Francisco. Chad is a CPA at BDO USA, LLP; Michelle works as a Project Manager for Genentech, Inc. Lesli Redenbaugh '09 and Umang Desai '09 married March 10 and 11, 2012. To honor both cultures and faiths, the two had a Catholic ceremony followed by a Hindu ceremony in the city of Seattle. Friends, family, and SCU alumni Andrew Carlson '90, Craig Carlson '87, Margaux Chan '09, Simi Rattan '08, Rachel Manfre '09, and Meagan Diss '09 were in attendance. Following a brief stay in San Francisco, CA after graduate school, the couple has relocated to Seattle, Washington.

Katharine Deeny '09 is serving through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps at La Raza Centro Legal in San Francisco, which provides community empowerment and legal services for low-income immigrants in the community. The organization operates in five different fields with a Senior Law Program, Immigration Law, Workers' Rights, the San Francisco Day Laborer Program, and La Colectiva de Mujeres--a domestic workers group of women who fight for passage of workers' rights at the legislative level and are at the forefront of the workers' rights movement on both local and national scales.

Bronco alumni in attendance included Lindsey's mom, Angela (Lum) Thomas '75, as well as Jake David '04, Jake Peterson '04, Kim Ehret '04, Christina Jimenez '04, Joy (Wasai) Nishida '04, Khanh Chau '04, Jeff Cook '04, and Sonia (Mungal) Cook '04. The couple lives in Santa Clara. Lindsey is the Sustainability Coordinator for SCU and Matt is a Systems Engineer at Lockheed-Martin.

Carrillo, Brenda
Brenda Carrillo M.A. ’09, coordinator of student health and safety for the Santa Clara County Office of Education since 2010, was nominated to become Palo Alto's coordinator of student services by Superintendent Kevin Skelly. The position was created in 2010 after a string of Palo Alto student deaths by suicide shook the community and led the district and others to boost and coordinate their efforts on student mental health. Carrillo has worked in program management, counseling, and teaching, including work as a teacher in the Palo Alto district's Saturday Math Academy from 2008 to 2010.

Former Santa Clara basketball standout John Bryant ’09 has been having a tremendous career in Germany with the club Ratiopharm Ulm. He was named the MVP of the German league last season and is well on his way to doing the same this season, as he is the league’s leading scorer and rebounder—not to mention one of the fans’ favorites throughout the country.
