On May 1, 2010, William E. Straw '71  was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, Calif., after serving as 28 years as Team Physician for the Lancers.

James L. Stoelker '71, of Saratoga, was appointed to the Santa Clara County Superior Court by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Soelker has been a principal at Mount and Stoelker since 1988. Previously, he was a partner for Mount, Kraw and Stoelker in 1987, Eller, Burt and Stoelker from 1984 to 1987 and Garrison, Townsend and Orser from 1983 to 1984. Stoelker served as a staff litigation attorney for Western Title Insurance from 1976 to 1983 and an associate attorney for Atwood and Hurst from 1974 to 1975. He earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Santa Clara University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Santa Clara University.

Mary McQuade Schrey Springer '71, relocated to Eugene, Oregon in 2009 and has been instrumental in bringing the non-profit SecondSaturday to Eugene. One of the oldest non-profits in the United States, Second Saturday's mission is to keep divorcing women and their children out of poverty through education and support. Through her private psychotherapy practice she has also spearheaded a Grandparents Raising their Grandchildren Network and is on the Board of the Oregaon Association of Collaborative Professionals. She and her husband, Dean, also enjoy exploring Oregon backroads and her two granddaughters.

Charles J. Sprigman Jr., J.D. '71 has joined the Hoffman DiMuzio firm as Of Counsel. Following his graduation from Middlebury College in Vermont, Sprigman served two years as a line infantry officer in the U.S. Army, and then obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Santa Clara Law School in Santa Clara, Calif. He has practiced law in Gloucester County since 1971. During his professional career, Sprigman has served as a municipal solicitor, school board attorney, prosecutor, and municipal court judge throughout Gloucester County, N.J. He has also acted as a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Civil Practice Committee, Committee on Civil Jury Charges and the District Ethics Committee. Sprigman has devoted time to his community as a councilman in the Borough of Wenonah, trustee of the Wenonah Swim Club and member of the Administrative Board of the Kemble Methodist Church. He and his wife of 44 years reside in Wenonah, N.J.

James M. Schiavenza '71, J.D. '74 has been named dean of Lincoln Law School of Sacramento where he has been an adjunct professor of law for more than 25  years. He recently retired from the State Attorney Genral's Office where he has worked since 1975. Jim, his wife, Ellen, and daughter Kathleen reside in Sacramento.

 
Dan Pastorini '71 has published a new autobiography, Taking Flak: My Life in the Fast Lane, and was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in November. Pastorini quarterbacked the Oilers to the AFC title game twice, was the first player to wear a protective flak jacket and threw the pass that helped lead to the NFL adopting instant replay. His book tells about his colorful career and life, which includes 13 years as an NFL quarterback, professional drag-racing, dabbling in the Hollywood lifestyle, marrying a Playboy model, posing for Playgirl, and for his much-publicized brushes with the law.

Bill Orme '71 is a senior environmental scientist and serves as the chief of the 401 Certification and Wetlands Unit, Division Water Quality, State Water Resources Control Board. He is a California Registered Professional Forester, and has enjoyed a 19-year career as a professional forester. He worked for California State Parks in grants and as a Senior Resource Ecologist before joining the State Water Resources Control Board.

Anne Middleton '71 writes: "I've lived in La Jolla for nearly 30 years, enjoy working as a fundraiser at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and treasure my free time - spending time with family and friends, traveling frequently, and attending theatrical and sporting events. In the years to come, I look forward to dividing my time between homes in La Jolla and Lake Tahoe - and writing a personal history or two each year. I co-authored my first book, 'Middie's Memoirs,' with my father, Arthur, the book's focus, in 2009."

Janet Kuhlman '71 retired from teaching in 2005.  Widowed in 2006 (David Kuhlman), Janet continues to reside in Huntington Beach, Calif. She has two grandchildren and spends one third of the year at home in Hawaii.  She has two grown sons, David and Andrew, both married. 

Cathy (Skelly) Kelly '71 is the 8th grade homeroom teacher and vice principal at St. Philip Neri School in Alameda. Patrick Kelly '71 continues to represent the disabled with his law office in San Rafael.

Kevin Kelly '71 writes, "This past summer, I had the opportunity with a collection of other old basketball jocks to play in the FIMBA World Masters Basketball Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. There were 16 teams in the 60+ category from a host of European countries, Brazil and our team from the U.S.  As we were awaiting our first game, the German team was playing on the floor.  I ran down to the court during a timeout because the two stars on the German team were Bud Ogden '69 and Ralph Ogden '70.  I was aware that Ralph lived in Germany after many years of playing for their professional team, but I also knew (from having played against him in some U.S. tournaments) that Bud lived in Gilroy and coached there.  I immediately approached him and joked that I was not aware he was German and he told me to spread the word that he lived in Gilroy, Germany.  The best part of our encounter was when our team, Columbia Sportsware from Portland, Oregon, ended up lined up against the German team in the finals one week later.  While I knew and practiced against both of them my freshman year (when they both were All-Americans), I never really got to play with them due to injuries and lack of talent on my part. Our U.S. team eked out a victory over Germany and the Ogdens in the final—and they were as gracious off the court as they had been good on the court.  One of our players tried to recruit Ralph to join us at the World Masters Games later in the year.  While he declined, he did demand a rematch—a request we will gladly accept at the next opportunity. Three SCU former ball players on the same court thirty some-odd years later.  What a great reunion!!"

Tim Johnson '71, '74 M.A. writes: "Karen & I celebrated 40 years (40 mutually agreeable/satisfying 1 year contracts!), with 2 daughters, 6 grandkids (8-13). Live in San Jose/Almaden Valley, while I toil to keep Karen in new shoes. Two knee replacements, almost hairless, carrying a few extra kilos, but still an optimist with a gratitude for my faith, family and friends."

Phil Johnson '71 writes: "I've been married for 23 wonderful years to my wife, Vicki, who has amazing patience and fortitude! We are raising 4 great kids, Kelly (Graduated Colorado, Boulder, 2011), Christy (Junior, Georgetown), Dan (Junior, Jesuit HS) and Tori (Freshman, St, Francis, Sacramento). We also helped our niece through high school and college and she just gradusted form Cal, Berkeley! We live up in the Sacramento area and love it! I was in Hi-Tech for 25 years (HP, Andersen Consulting, a few start-ups) and have spend the last 10 years focusing on real estate syndications. As real estate is taking a hiatus, I am looking to go back into Hi-Tech or Foundation/Non-Profit work which we did a lot of in the Sac area."

Susan E. Johnson M.A. ’71 was interviewed in May for the Standard-Examiner in an article titled "Futura Leader Inspires Others." Johnson is president and CEO of Futura Industries, an engineering company based in Utah. Her work at the company during the past several years has garnered numerous awards and write-ups in publications, including Forbes.

Susan Johnson M.A. ’71, president of Futura Industries Corp., of Clearfield, has been appointed a director of the Salt Lake City branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. A native of El Paso, Texas, Johnson has a bachelor of science degree in engineering from California Polytechnic State University and has done graduate studies at the University of Santa Clara and University of California, Irvine.

Mark Ivary '71 writes: "I was married to my late wife for 27 years until her death in 2002. We have 3 kids, Christine, Nicholas, and Adam. I have owned and operated an Ace Hardware store in Stockton, Calif., for the past 31 years, as well as being a general contractor for the past 15 years. So, German major -- hardware store......I spent 3 semesters in Europe with IES if that explains anything."

Alan Higginson '69, MBA '71 was appointed to the board of directors of Pivot3, Inc., a leading provider of unified storage and compute appliances. Higginson, Chairman, Hubspan and F5 Networks, will provide his extensive technology and leadership experience of high-growth technology companies to the Pivot3 board and its management team.

With more than 20 years of senior executive and CEO experience in technology-related industries, Higginson applies his extensive leadership skills to help young companies grow and develop. His industry experience spans both private and public companies including Atrieva, F5 Networks and Hubspan. Prior to his work with start-up organizations, Higginson spent five years at Sierra On-Line as executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing.

Theresa Grieshaber '71 writes: "Masters Degree in Library Science, University of Southern California, 1978. I have lived in Modesto, California for the last twenty years with my husband, Howard. I recently retired from my position as a reference librarian after 16 years at Stanislaus County Public Library. We are the parents of 2 grown daughters."

Mike Friedrich ’71 received a Certificate of Ministry Studies from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, Calif. in May 2012. Mike is currently enrolled in the Master of Theological Studies program at PSR. He is active in his home church, Berkeley Methodist United Church, conducting adult religious education classes and chairing the Worship Committee. Recently DC Comics reprinted in the hardcover collection Justice League, vol. 10, the comic book scripts that Mike wrote during his senior year at Santa Clara. Keen eyes will spot the SCU references in the backgrounds.

Dave Fitzgerald '71 writes that he retired from USAF in 2000 and from TASC, inc. in 2010 and invested in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 2012 (Northern Lieutenancy).
