Club Descriptions and Websites

The Campus Recreation Club Sports program is currently capped with these 18 competitive clubs. We will not be accepting applications for any additional Club Sports for the upcoming 2008-2009 academic year. All students wanting to be part of a competitive team should consider joining one of these clubs, playing intramural sports, or signing up for a local sports league. All students wanting to start a "recreational" club that will not compete against other universities will need to go through Associated Students to become a registered student organization.

Club websites are not maintained by Campus Recreation. Views expressed on club websites are not necessarily the views of the Campus Recreation Program.

Men's and Women's (Team) Clubs

Men's Ice Hockey
The Hockey club joined the Club Sports Program in October of 2006. The team plans to play and practice at Logitech Ice, located 10 minutes away from campus in San Jose. They encourage anyone with a background in Ice Hockey or Roller Hockey to come out and experience the fastest game on ice.

Men's Lacrosse
For over 25 years, the Men's Lacrosse program has built success based on tradition, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence.  This club competes in the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League (Division A-Central) with games during the Winter and Spring Quarters.  Practices are held between six to eight hours a week and try-outs are typically held in the Fall Quarter.

Men's Rugby
The goal of SCUTS (Santa Clara University Touring Side) is to introduce world culture into American sports.  Rugby is a full-contact sport played without pads but players do not need to be large in order to be successful, as rugby also requires much strategy. Many of the club members have never played rugby until they came to Santa Clara and the club is always looking for new members.  This club works hard, plays hard, and has fun.

Men's Ultimate
The Ultimate club is also known as SCAB (Santa Clara's Altered Beasts). This team is a group of fun lovin' guys working hard to further the Ultimate program at SCU. The team, like the sport itself, is young and fun to watch! They travel all over California and the Pacific Northwest to compete. The West Coast competition is tough but SCAB is up to the challenge. The team is always looking for new members.

Men's Volleyball
With back to back top ten finishes at the national tournament, the Men's Volleyball club has established themselves as a national power. From late January through March, the team competes in the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League comprised of nine colleges in the bay area. The team encourages everyone to tryout in the Fall Quarter regardless of skill level or previous playing experience.

Women's Field Hockey
The Field Hockey club is the newest addition to the Club Sports Program.  This team provides the SCU community with the opportunity to continue their passion for this sport in addition to the opportunity for beginners to learn the sport of Field Hockey.  The club encourages all female SCU students to come experience a practice or join the team.

Women's Lacrosse
The Women's Lacrosse club travels throughout California and Arizona to compete in the Western Women's Lacrosse League. Each year, their goal is to finish at the top of their conference and qualify for the National Championships. In fact, the team has qualified for Nationals the past three years in a row! Practices are held between six to eight hours a week and games are played during the Winter and Spring Quarters. Try-outs are held in the Fall Quarter.

Women's Rugby
The Women's Rugby club is also known as BRUWS (Bronco Rugby Union Women's Side). This club provides an opportunity for women at SCU to get involved with the campus community and build lasting friendships. The team practices three times a week and competes in league matches during the Winter Quarter. They represent SCU in the Pacific collegiate region of USA Rugby.

Women's Ultimate
Also known as SCRUW (Santa Clara Raging Ultimate Women), this team offers a place for females to play the competitive, fast-paced sport of Ultimate Frisbee.  The team is relatively new but has a very promising future.  The team plays in various tournaments throughout the year, up and down the West Coast.  No matter your experience, you are encouraged to give this fun and exciting sport a try as it adapts well to athletes of any background.

Women's Club Volleyball
The Women's Club Volleyball team competes in the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League and is an established threat at both the league and national championship level.  Anyone interested in joining the team should attend open gym and tryouts which are held early in the Fall Quarter.

Open Clubs (Co-rec)

Boxing
The Boxing club is made up of SCU students with an interest in keeping fit, learning self defense, or training to fight competitively. No experience is necessary to join the club, and most of the members are new to the sport of boxing. For those wishing to take their skills to the next level, the competitive portion of this club participates in intercollegiate bouts, representing SCU at the regional and national level.

Cycling
The Cycling club has been a student group on campus for many years. The club includes a competitive racing team as well as a more recreational mountain biking group. The racing team will be competing in the NCCA (National Collegiate Cycling Association) against prominent teams in many Northern California races.

Equestrian
The Equestrian club consists of both competing and non-competing members. The team competes against the schools in Zone 8 of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA).  As a club, they organize group rides and on-campus events, including having the San Jose Mounted Unit visit campus. The team is open to any student who has an interest in horses and horseback riding. No experience is necessary-students must only share a passion for horses.

Paintball
The Paintball club was formed to provide tournament paintball experience for college students. It is an open team; anyone who wishes to try tournament paintball is welcomed to join. The team competes in local college tournaments as well as national tournaments through the National Collegiate Paintball Association (NCPA). This club provides its members with camaraderie, leadership skills, and unique memories of playing paintball.

Sailing
The Sailing club team practices and sails in nearby Redwood City. The club competes in collegiate dinghy regattas all along the West Coast. Collegiate sailing mostly competes in Flying Juniors but also in the Laser class sailboats.  Sailing is exciting and highly rewarding as the team continues to build a strong reputation.

Shotokan Karate
The Shotokan Karate club has been active on campus for over 40 years. This martial arts form is a Japanese-based style from Okinawa.  The great instructors will help you gain confidence and strength while training you in this popular form of karate. This club will prepare you for tournaments, belt-testing, and self-defense.

Swimming
The Swim club welcomes all levels of swimmers! Their practices offer challenging swim workouts as well as a chance to be social with students that have similar interests. As a club, they are working up to the Masters level of swimming so that they can begin competing.

Triathlon
The Triathlon club is a competitive group, training to be a serious contender at the collegiate triathlon level while still having fun.  They strive to stay in peak condition, both physically and mentally, by pushing each other during training sessions. The team is open to all people, experienced or not! The main goals are to train hard, train smart and have fun.
