Sullivan Aquatic Center Policies

In addition to the General Facility Policies;

To Use the Pool:

  • Each patron must be a member of the Malley Center and/or paid guest. Follow the link for more information about the Guest Policies.
    • No one is allowed to climb the pool fence, enter from the Leavey Center or enter from the Leavey Center Locker Rooms.
    • Exception: Water Polo players during scheduled practice times may enter the pool area from their locker room and student-athletes doing rehabilitation in the pool can enter through the locker rooms if escorted by a professional staff member from the Sports Medicine department.
  • The pool area is only open for use during scheduled hours when guarded by the Malley Center Lifeguard Staff. 
    • Pool use outside of posted hours must be scheduled with the Director of Recreation. 

Emergency phones are located on the east side of the pool deck (near the tarps) as well as in the Malley Center Men's and Women's Locker Rooms.

To increase safety:           
  • Diving, flips, cartwheels, handstands, and backwards/spinning jumps from the side of the pool are prohibited.
  • Running, pushing, rough play (dunking, riding shoulders, splashing, etc), and throwing objects are prohibited.
  • Flips, cartwheels, handstands, backward jumps, and spinning jumps from the side of the pool are prohibited.
  • Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian at all times in the pool and pool area.  
    • The lifeguard may request a swim test for children wanting to swim in the deep water.
    • Infants are required to wear plastic pants or swim diapers in the pool.
  • No alcohol, smoking, food, drink, or glass is allowed in pool area.  Water is the only acceptable beverage and it must be in a sealable plastic container.
  • No radios/ CD players except for those with personal headphones.
  • Throwing balls is prohibited.
    • Exception: Water Polo balls during scheduled practices and agreed individual water polo work out times. Water Polo players may conduct individual workouts during non-crowded conditions with Lifeguard approval but must stay out of the lap lanes.
  • Flotation devices are not permitted unless they are Coast Guard Approved Personal Flotation Devices. 
  • Patrons with a cold, virus, communicable disease, open scars, ear, or nasal discharge are not allowed in the pool. 
  • No animals allowed in the pool area except for appropriately labeled guide dogs assisting persons with disabilities. 

To protect equipment:

  • A bathing suit must be worn. No jeans shorts, cut-offs or street clothes.
  • Please shower before entering the pool. No suntan oil on deck or in the pool. Sunscreen is recommended for all patrons.
  • Do not hang on the lane lines. Do not sit on the disabled lift unless you require it to use the pool. 
  • Kickboards and pull-buoys are available on the pool deck for lap swimming only.
As a courtesy to others:
  • “Free play” activities must give priority to lap swimmers. 
  • Circle swimming is encouraged during times of heavy use in the lap lane area.

Pool availability is subject to weather and maintenance conditions.

Did You Know?

Private swim lessons are available for anyone 6 months and older. We have instructors that teach a large range of abilities from triathletes wanting to improve their stroke, to older adults wanting to learn to swim, to children who need to learn both water safety and proper techniques.
