The Lawyer on the Playing Field: SCU Symposium on Sports Law to Examine Steroids, Concussions, Use of Player ImagesMonday, Aug. 23, 2010SANTA CLARA, Calif. August 23, 2010 — The top sports law issues of the day – including steroid use, concussions and dementia, and who has the right to license player’s images— will be discussed at an all-day forum Sept. 16 at Santa Clara University School of Law. Attendees will hear the latest legal news and trends straight from the mouths of current and former players, team officials, union leaders, sports-marketing giants and academic experts from Santa Clara University, Stanford University, University of California and University of San Francisco. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. in the University’s Locatelli Student Activity Center, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053. The schedule of events can be found at SCU Law’s website. In addition, the keynote speaker at 9:10 a.m. will be Alan Schwarz, prize-winning author and journalist for the New York Times, who helped bring the connection between concussions and early-onset dementia to national attention with a series of articles starting in 2007. Schwarz has won numerous journalism awards including two Associated Press awards for feature writing in sports, and a George Polk award for sports writing. San Francisco Giants’ Managing Partner William Neukom is the featured lunchtime speaker at 12:35 p.m. The forum is presented in association with the Santa Clara University Athletic Department.
