Women in Business Conference to Address Adaptability and Innovation

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 9, 2010 – Virgin America finance executive Holly Nelson will address about 250 business professionals on Saturday, April 17, as the keynote speaker for the annual Santa Clara University Women in Business conference. 

The day-long event begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Plug and Play Tech Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., and will include sessions with entrepreneurs, social media marketing specialists, and workplace-diversity consultants.

“With the tumultuous economic cycle we have experienced over the last few years we want to highlight how to thrive in any kind of environment,” said Adelene Gallego Ramos, marketing vice president of Women in Business, a graduate student group in the University’s Leavey School of Business. “Our conference focus on ‘Adaptability and Innovation’ will help business leaders adjust to rapidly changing conditions.”

The Women in Business conference, in its eighth year, also features presentations by Jeannie Kahwajy, CEO of Effective Interactions, and Julia Hartz, co-founder and president of Eventbrite, as well as Mary Furlong, Dean’s Executive Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Santa Clara University Business School, and Radha Basu, co-founder of Anudip Foundation and managing director of the University’s Center for Science, Technology, and Society.

As an airline industry veteran, keynote speaker Nelson has more than 20 years’ experience in adapting and innovation. She became senior vice president and chief financial officer at Virgin America in April 2009 and is responsible for the new California-based airline’s financial operations, including treasury, tax, procurement and fleet planning. She has served in leadership roles at XOJET, Inc., Eos Airlines, JetBlue, Republic Airlines, and Northwestern Airlines. A Certified Public Accountant, she received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Clair.
