Santa Clara University conference: Transformative Changes Through Science and Technology
Friday, Nov. 7, 2008
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 7 -- Santa Clara University's Center for Science, Technology, and Society, a founding partner of the Tech Awards, will host a one-day, public conference -- Transformative Changes Through Science and Technology: The Role for Social Benefit Entrepreneurs -- on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature the work of socially-conscious innovators from around the world and showcase examples of how science and technology can be used to address some of the world's most urgent human needs.
Muhammad Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of the microcredit movement and the Grameen Bank, will provide the morning keynote address, "Social Business, Science, and Technology as Forces for Justice and Prosperity."
Bill Drayton, CEO and Chair of Ashoka, one of the largest organizations dedicated to supporting the work of social entrepreneurs worldwide, will speak on "Leveraging the Power of Networks for Social and Institutional Change."
The 2008 Tech Awards laureates will lead category breakout sessions to engage the public in conversations about their work to improve the human condition in the areas of education, environment, economic development, equality, and health.
Attendees from investment firms, foundations, commercial entities, academic institutions, government officials, and philanthropists will be challenged to take action at multiple levels in a format that encourages a free flow of ideas through facilitated discussions, panel presentations, category breakout sessions, and a networking lunch.
"Social benefit entrepreneurs can and do identify societal problems and apply innovative business ideas and technological solutions to address them," said Geoffrey Bowker, executive director of SCU's Center for Science, Technology, and Society. "From entirely new science to novel ways of organizing existing systems and solutions, these innovators can become agents of lasting social change."
The Transformative Changes Through Science and Technology: The Role of Social Benefit Entrepreneurs conference is sponsored by Applied Materials and Cisco Systems, in cooperation with The Tech Awards, and with support from Santa Clara University's Food and Agribusiness Institute.
A video of Dr. Yunus' keynote presentation will be available through the Center for Science, Technology, and Society's website (www.scu.edu/sts) shortly after the conference ends.
