Santa Clara University Names Mick McCarthy As New Executive Director of Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education
Friday, Jun. 24, 2011
SANTA CLARA, Calif. June 24, 2011—Michael (Mick) McCarthy, S.J., will be the new executive director of Santa Clara University’s Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education starting July 18.
“I am delighted to serve the university in this capacity,” says McCarthy. “The new Strategic Plan makes clear Santa Clara’s commitment to the goals and values of Jesuit education. I look forward to helping people deepen their understanding of what that means and, in their own way, to connect with our larger mission.”
As executive director, McCarthy will provide leadership for the Ignatian Center, which is dedicated to advancing the university’s Jesuit Catholic commitment to integrate faith, justice, and the intellectual life on campus and beyond. He will report directly to President Michael Engh, S.J.
“Mick McCarthy, S.J., brings a passion for Jesuit education, and spirituality, as seen in his successful career as a priest, Catholic theologian and teaching scholar,” says Engh. “Students, faculty, staff, trustees, and the larger community will all benefit from his energy and insight.”
McCarthy joined Santa Clara faculty in 2003 with a joint appointment in the Religious Studies and Classics Departments and teaches a wide variety of courses—theological, historical, and literary—that reflect SCU’s commitment to liberal arts education. He holds the Edmund Campion S.J. Professor endowed chair and is also director of the Catholic Studies Program.
After a year as an undergraduate at Stanford, McCarthy entered the Jesuits and finished his bachelor’s degree in Classical Languages at Santa Clara University in 1987. He attended Oxford University to complete the 4-year M.A. (Oxon.) in Literae Humaniores. After receiving a master’s in divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley in 1997, he went on to earn a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Notre Dame in 2003, with an emphasis on early Christianity.
He has served on a range of boards including the national Seminar on Jesuit Spirituality and the Trustees of Seattle University, where he is on the Academic Affairs and Catholic Jesuit Identity Committees. He has also been chair of the Board of Trustees at St. Ignatius College Prep. in San Francisco.
McCarthy will replace Kevin Quinn, S.J., who left the position in January to become President at University of Scranton.
