Biosafety

The University strives to ensure that all biohazardous materials used in teaching and research are properly obtained, used, stored, transferred, and disposed of.

The Biosafety Officer works to minimize risks associated with biological hazards and to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations pertaining to biohazardous materials. The Biosafety Officer provides biosafety training and technical guidance.

The Biosafety Committee (BSC) reviews all requests to conduct research involving rDNA and biologically hazardous materials.

It is the instructor or investigator's responsibility to provide complete information about teaching and research procedures involving rDNA and biologically hazardous materials by completing the SCU biosafety application form. Completed forms must be submitted to the Office of Research Compliance & Integrity (Protocols@scu.edu) for BSC review.

For projects that require a full review and that will be submitted to federal/non-federal funding agencies, a sixty (60) day lead time is recommended. For research that is not funded externally, a thirty (30) day lead time will generally suffice.

Any researcher planning to submit a proposal to an external sponsor that involves the use of biohazardous materials must complete appropriate documents with the Sponsored Projects Office.
