Inclusive Excellence BlogFrom the Achievement Gap to the Education DebtWednesday, Feb. 1, 2012Lecture on Wednesday, 3/7/12, at 5 p.m., in the Locatelli Center. Professor Gloria Ladson-Billings, who has taught at SCU, is one of the leading voices in the U.S. on national education policy. She argues that the term "racial achievement gap" unfairly constructs students as "defective and lacking" and "admonishes them that they need to catch up." She also argues that the term "education debt" moves us to a discourse that "holds us all accountable." Professor Ladson-Billings holds the Kellner Family Chair in Urban Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The lecture is being coordinated by the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.
