Thao Nguyen, SJ

Assistant Professor

Prof. Nguyen came to Seattle from Vietnam with his family in the 1990s. He received his Ph.D. at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley in 2013.  His research interests focus on interreligious dialogue and on new models of the church. His dissertation “A New Way of Being Church: Asian Bishops and Asian Catholic Women in Dialogue” not only presents the Asian Bishop’s new vision of the church in Asia but envisions the future of the church as a whole throughout the world.  He hopes that his passion for pastoral engagement, research, and teaching will provide new opportunities for interreligious dialogue and new ways to introduce new models of a participatory church.  In addition to his passion for academic work, Nguyen is also a prolific writer. He has written a number of Vietnamese stories. His true-life stories that focus on the amazing ways that God has worked in people’s lives have become popular among the Vietnamese Catholics overseas as well as those in Vietnam. Nguyen joined the faculty at Santa Clara University in 2013.
