Why do you want to serve as an International Ambassador?
I want to serve as an International Ambassador at Santa Clara University because I had a very positive experience while studying abroad and I want to share it with the rest of the Santa Clara community. I made many new friends and had the opportunity to travel all around Europe. I saw and did things that I would have never been able to do if it was not for the Santa Clara Study Abroad Program.
Deciding factor for studying abroad?
I have always had a passion to learn Italian and experience Italian culture. My Italian heritage was a major deciding factor in deciding to study in Rome. As a freshman, I took Italian I, II, and III and my professors for those classes had an extreme impact on my decision to study in Rome.
Defining Moment Abroad?
Because I studied abroad in Rome, I was able to meet my Italian cousins for the very first time. This experience affected me personally because I would have never been able to meet these amazing people if I had not been in Italy through the Santa Clara study abroad program. It affected me intellectually because I was forced out of my comfort zone due to a language barrier that forced me to use my Italian to converse with them. Academically, I was affected by my professors in Rome. They taught me so much more about myself and my abilities to succeed as a student.
Advice to Prospective study abroad students?
I would advise prospective study abroad students to research where they are studying. I would also tell them to go in with an open mind and to understand that they must be prepared for anything. I would tell them to listen to those who have studied abroad before them, but to not let those experiences shape their experience abroad. Each student will have their own experience and they need to form it themselves.
