Vice President for Enrollment Management
1. How do you define a great application?
After reviewing nearly 100,000 applications, I still think it comes down to whether I can envision the student behind the application. I can easily assess past performance with what is in the file. The best applications also let me see that spark of future potential. I want to be able to see that student walking into a professor's class and being able not only to learn but, to contribute. As a former teacher, I think of those students who challenged me with good, well-crafted questions.
2. What inspires your work?
I love working with this age group as they make this important decision. I get to work with the ones who are motivated and accomplished. It?s a very self-selected group. And, I get to come to work on this campus and that can inspire anyone.
3. What do you do in your spare time?
Now that my children have graduated from college and gotten married, ?spare? time has changed. My wife and I like to travel. China was a favorite and there is plenty to do right here in California. Personally, my most recent avocation has been mountain climbing? Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and one in Ecuador. I?m also a sports fan, especially soccer and basketball.
4. What is your favorite song?
Songs stay in my head for a while then move on. My favorite one is whatever is latest.
