Foreword

For the Greater Good

Increasingly, institutions of higher learning need to better articulate their value, not only to individual students, but also to the larger community. As an institution of Jesuit higher learning, Santa Clara is well positioned to tell a compelling story of educating men and women, not only for themselves, but for the greater good.

One prime example of this approach is the University’s new Core Curriculum. Our graduates are needed now more than ever to help serve, lead, and transform a troubled world. Because the Core provides the common learning experience that unites all Santa Clara students, it is especially important to prepare them to be effective and ethical professionals, citizens, and individuals.

In addition to fostering academically and ethically rigorous learning among undergraduate and graduate students, the Core is an example of collaborative and organization-wide learning. Hundreds of faculty, administrators, trustees, and students worked together to create it.

Santa Clara University, as a learning organization, supports the intellectual and spiritual education of its faculty and staff as well as its students. It provides the entire community with learning opportunities—from Ethics at Noon presentations sponsored by the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics to full-scale immersion trips to El Salvador for faculty and staff.

The University’s commitment to academic excellence underlies all of its activities. The stories featured in this report illustrate the following aspects of our academic excellence:
