UPC End-of-Year Meeting
Every spring, the current and incoming chairs of governance groups and other committees, presidents of the Staff Senate and the Faculty Senate, members of the University Coordinating Committee, and administrators who have roles in the governance process, gather for a reflection on the work of University governance accomplished during the academic year. The meeting for this year is scheduled for May 22. This will be an opportunity for each group to report on its activities for the year and to discuss accomplishments and challenges. Following the meeting, the annual summary report that includes the reports of the various groups will be posted on the Governance Web site.
2014 Commencement Speakers and Honorary Degree Recipients
This year, soccer star and girls' health advocate Brandi Chastain '91 will be the commencement speaker at the 2014 Undergraduate Commencement Exercises on June 14. The selection of Brandi to give the commencement address honors the 50th anniversary of women's athletics at Santa Clara, which the University celebrates this year. She epitomizes the world-class leadership and fortitude that every Bronco is capable of achieving. Brandi is a dedicated and disciplined athlete who is also committed to strengthening communities by advocating for and empowering young girls. At Commencement, she will also receive an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service. Other honorary degree recipients will be Trustee Emeritus Rupert Johnson and his wife, Maryellie, Rev. Howard A. Lincoln, and the Kino Border Initiative, represented by Executive Director Rev. Sean Carroll, S.J.
At the Graduate Commencement on June 13, Fred Ferrer ‘80, CEO of the Health Trust, will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service. On May 24, Rev. Jon Sobrino, S.J. will give the commencement address and Rev. Joseph Chinnici, OFM will receive an honorary degree at the JST commencement in Berkeley . Also on May 24, the Law School will hold its commencement exercises and honor human rights attorney Almudena Bernabeu as the commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient.
This weekend we expect to host about 3000 visitors on campus for Preview Days. This is an important opportunity for admitted students to decide if Santa Clara is the place for them. Of the nearly 15,000 applicants for the freshman class of 1300 spots, 48.8% were admitted. Throughout the weekend, faculty, staff and students will give tours and presentations on academic programs, student life, housing, international programs and many more topics. I thank all the members of the University community who will be on campus to welcome our guests and present Santa Clara at its best.
