Osher Events : Summer 2014 Destination Learning Trip

Behind-the-Scenes Tour of U.S.S. Hornet and St George Spirits

Join us on an exciting Osher Destination Learning trip to the U.S.S. Hornet, a floating museum berthed in Alameda (site of the former Naval Air Station). This aircraft carrier, which saw service in WW II, was decommissioned and opened to the public as a museum in 1998. The museum houses assorted aircraft and items related to Apollo 11, the first U.S. manned space mission. Enjoy (!) a flight simulator ride and experience the thrill of being “launched” from the flight deck in an F/A 18 jet. You’ll have a two hour docent tour and time on your own to explore the ship; a box lunch will be served in the Officer’s Mess. You’ll be stirred by the ship’s history, citations, and fighting spirit.
 
Afterwards, we’ll enjoy a different kind of “spirit’ at the nearby St. George Spirits, “America’s original craft distillery.” In business since 1982, their family of spirits includes single malt whiskey, bourbon, agricole rum, absinthe, and several gins, brandies, and liqueurs. There will be an hour-long docent tour of the facility which explains the process and products, followed by a tasting flight of six handcrafted spirits served by a “spirit guide.”

Please Note: To fully enjoy the USS Hornet Museum tour, please be advised that on the walk there will be stepping over numerous decks and climbing steep stairs.  Please bring appropriate clothing to layer so that you are comfortable.

Tour Cost:   $125 per person
 
Parking: Your trip fee includes a complimentary parking permit good for the entire day at the Leavey Activity Center parking lot. You will receive this permit upon your arrival at the lot. The Leavey Center is Building 702 on the Santa Clara campus; the Leavey Parking Lot can be accessed via Accolti Way (which is at the intersection of El Camino Real, Campbell Ave. and Accolti Way).
 
Time: Plan to be at the Leavey lot by 8:15 AM for check-in. The bus will depart promptly at 8:30  AM for a 9:50 AM arrival at the USS Hornet. We plan to return to campus by 5:00 PM depending on traffic
 
Cancellations:  Cancellations must be received 30 days before event date to receive full refund.  After 30 days, you must locate a replacement to cover your spot and you must notify the office accordingly.  Cancellation notice must be made in writing via email to olliatscu@gmail.com.
 
Risk Waiver: Please sign and return it by mail to Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara CA 95053.   
 
Conditions:  We are limited to 56 participants.  Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.  You may only register yourself; if you wish to attend with friends or family, each participant will need to register separately and must be an OLLI member, so sign up early.  A waitlist will be established in the event of a sold-out trip.
