Sports Concussions to be Examined at Santa Clara University Symposium Sept. 12

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 26, 2013 — With thousands of lawsuits pending and heartbreaking reports coming in regularly about the damage from sports-related concussions, what is the extent of the problem and what are the proposed solutions for this persistent dilemma?
Some of the top minds charged with analyzing and setting policy for sports in the United States will be on hand to discuss the topic Sept. 12, at the fourth annual Sports Law and Ethics Symposium at Santa Clara University. The event will feature keynote speaker Alan Schwarz, New York Times reporter and author.
The all-day symposium will be presented by Santa Clara University’s Institute of Sports Law and Ethics. The event will take place Sept. 12 at SCU’s Paul L. Locatelli, S.J., Student Activities Center, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Additional conference speakers will include:
* NFL Hall-of-Famer Ronnie Lott
*Three-time NFL All-Pro Brent Jones
*Boston University neurosurgery professor and NFL adviser Dr. Robert Cantu
*President of the National College Players Association Ramogi Huma
*Olympic and World Cup soccer champion Brandi Chastain
*ESPN reporter Tom Farrey
*University of the Pacific athletics VP of external relations Ted Leland
A special lunchtime presentation will address “What we can learn from what happened at Rutgers,” – regarding the abusive treatment of basketball players at that New Jersey university -- featuring presenters Jack Clark, head rugby coach at the University of California, and Jim Thompson, CEO and founder of Positive Coaching Alliance.
