 Santa Clara University School of Law welcomes new class of first-year students.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 23, 2013 — Santa Clara University School of Law on Monday welcomed its newest class of first-year J.D.-candidate students, who bring a wealth of personal and professional diversity to the Jesuit, Catholic institution in Silicon Valley.

The 218 full-time and 32 part-time students come from 24 states and nine foreign countries including Canada, China, India, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Mexico, Netherlands, and South Africa. Twenty incoming students already have advanced degrees, including five Ph.D., 10 M.S., two M.A., two MBA, and one master’s in environmental law and policy.

“We are pleased to welcome this wonderfully diverse and talented class of Santa Clara Law students,” said Lisa Kloppenberg, the new dean of Santa Clara Law. "Their varied backgrounds and accomplishments will bring wonderful depth to the rigorous academic program they will undertake at SCU."

The class is 55 percent male and 45 percent female, with 44 percent identifying as ethnic minorities.

About 2,600 people applied for spots in this year’s class, which has a median age of 24.

In addition to the students seeking their J.D. degrees, another 36 new students will pursue and advanced LLM law degree. Twenty-nine of them hold law degrees from outside the U.S., hailing from Austria, China, Egypt, England, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Philippines, South Korea, and Taiwan.
