In his presentation inspired by the book Food Justice, Christopher Bacon, assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences, will discuss some of his research into food justice issues. Topics will include the political ecology of cooperatives, fair trade coffee, and local food systems and their impacts on farmer livelihoods and food security in northern Nicaragua. Bacon uses a community-based participatory action research approach. He has published the book titled Confronting the Coffee Crisis: Fair Trade, Sustainable Livelihoods and Ecosystems in Mexico and Central America (MIT Press) and several recent articles in Ecology and Society and other journals about rural hunger, diversified farming systems, and sustainable development.
Bon Appetit will be serving a special theme lunch. The cost is $10 per person. You may register online. Payment can be made by debit card, credit card, or check.
