Beyond the Traditional Kitchen: Women in 19th-Century Mexican California

The women of California before the American conquest were a diverse group that included people from the rancho-owning elite, military communities, mission workers, and indigenous groups.
Using the thirteen interviews of such women conducted by Hubert Howe Bancroft's staff in the 1870s, and a late nineteenth-century cookbook, this presentation traces the unique contribution women made to the development of Californio society.
Rose Marie Beebe and Robert Senkewicz have both been teaching at Santa Clara since the 1970s, Bob since 1976 and Rose Marie since 1978.
Rose Marie is currently professor of Spanish literature and Bob is professor of history. They began collaborating in the 1990s and have produced a series of books dealing with California before the gold rush.
Bon Appétit will be serving a special theme lunch inspired by recipes from Encarnación's Kitchen Mexican Recipes from Nineteenth-Century California.
