About the Professor

Thomas Matus entered the New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, California in 1962 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1970. He has a background in music, ecumenical theology, comparative mysticism and history of religions and has resided in India and Brazil as well as California. For more than twenty years, he lectured at the Benedictine Monastic Institute of the Athenaeum Anselmianum in Rome. For two terms, from 1993-2003, he served as consultant for the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

Thomas teaches an intersession course at JST each January. In the past, at GTU and other institutions, he has taught history and spirituality courses on the topics of Hindu and Buddhist monasticism, theology of the spiritual life, yoga, philosophy, ontology, and interreligious dialogue.
