Learn how the Ignatian tradition of spirituality and discernment permeates every aspect of JST. With an abundance of opportunities to exercise and reflect on real-world pastoral situations, JST students apply in ministerial settings what they learn in class. Faithful to the Catholic tradition, world-class faculty teach students to think critically about theology and how to live a faith that does justice in service of the Church and the world.
World-class faculty, rigorous academic programs, and motivated students exemplify the JST educational experience. One of the nine schools and centers that comprise the interreligious and ecumenical Graduate Theological Union (GTU), JST is part of a unique "Holy Hill" experience. JST students have access to a wide array of theological resources, as they may take courses at any of the GTU schools, interact with other GTU students in their JST classes, and utilize the GTU's Flora Lamson Hewlett Library, one of the most comprehensive theological libraries in the country.
JST is the only school west of Chicago with an ecclesiastical faculty approved by the Congregation for Catholic Education to grant degrees in the name of the Pope. Students come from top schools and receive prestigious awards, such as the Fund for Theological Education scholarships, to study at JST. The school regularly reviews the degree programs to ensure they meet the highest standards and maintain an innovative edge. Our reputation for excellence in academics as well as pastoral and leadership preparation enables our students to graduate with jobs in hand.
Jesuits, women and men religious, and lay women and men from across the United States and from 40 other countries and six continents comprise the diverse yet inclusive student body at JST and model collaborative ministry and leadership for tomorrow's Church. Offering local and global sharing, students, faculty, and staff create a deep sense of community. Lay students have the option of living in intentional communities where they share meals and regularly reflect on their faith and ministry experiences. This sense of being companions on the spiritual journey extends to our over 3,000 alumni who are serving as leaders in the Church, academia and beyond through a myriad of ministries around the world.
