"Pope Francis: Continuity and Change"

Sunday, March 2, 2014
Mass at 11 a.m., Lecture and Discussion at noon, Reception at 1:00 p.m.
Country Club, 301 North Rossmore Avenue, Los Angeles

Pope FrancisThe election of Pope Francis last March ushered in a tremendous wave of excitement in church circles. He is not only the first Jesuit to hold this office, but also the first pope to come from Latin America, the Southern Hemisphere and the New World. What changes would this charismatic and attractive pontiff bring to the church? How would the richly symbolic gestures of openness and humility of our new Universal Pastor come to be translated into substantial and constructive reforms? What are the prospects for improvements in church policies and structures? Francis’s recent apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium gave us a few tantalizing insights as to the pontiff’s vision of church reform, while also touching on other controversial issues such as the ongoing economic crisis. As we approach Francis’s first anniversary in office, it is not too early to offer some assessment of his performance and his commitments, particularly from a theological perspective. Professor Thomas Cattoi (with a bit of assistance from Dean Thomas Massaro) will offer some preliminary theological insights into the papacy of Francis so far. The twin motifs of continuity and change will provide the basis for assessing the significance of what has been unfolding in the Vatican in recent months.
