CSA at SCU
What is CSA?
CSA, (for Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for the food buying public to create a relationship with a local farm and receive a weekly box of produce. It is a way of supporting local farms and eating locally and seasonally. By making a financial commitment to a farm, people become "members" (or "subscribers") of the CSA. Most CSA farmers prefer that members pay for the season up-front, but some farmers will accept weekly or quarterly payments. The Arrupe Partnerships for Community-based Learning through its collaboration with the Catalán’s Laughing Onion Farm supports CSA for members of the SCU community and its surrounding neighbors. This partnership allows students to learn about sustainable agriculture and organic farming and includes opportunities to work with the Catalán family at their farm in Hollister.
Who Are the Farmers?
The Catalán’s Laughing Onion Farm is a small family-run farm dedicated to sustainable agriculture and organic farming. María Inés Catalán, founder of the farm, is a former farm worker and single mother who manages the farm together with her daughter, three sons, and their families. She regularly responds to requests from the community to share her expertise and is one of the only Latina women in the US who runs her own farm and CSA program. She was recently recognized by the USDA for her work assisting other small farmers who are making the transition to organic farming.
How Can I Participate?
CSA boxes are delivered every other week to Sobrato Hall on the SCU campus. Each box includes a selection of seasonal vegetables that feeds approximately 4 adults/week. The cost is $22 for a box. You can subscribe to receive a box every other week or try it only once any time during the quarter. If you're interested, please return your completed subscription form and check to Laurie Laird, Ignatian Center, Sobrato Hall Room 30. We need to receive your order by noon on the Tuesday prior to delivery. If you have questions, contact Laurie at 554-5013 or lalaird@scu.edu.
