A collection of Ignatian Center newsletter Articles.
From August 23-30, 2013 ten members of the Santa Clara Administration and Staff travelled to El Salvador to have a first-hand encounter with the kind of high-impact experiential learning that is so important at Santa Clara. The group included Fr. Engh, S.J. (President), Dennis Jacobs (Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs) , Jeanne Rosenburger (Vice Provost for Student Life and Dean of Students), Susan Popko (Associate Provost for International Programs), Mike Sexton (Vice President for Enrollment Management), John Ottoboni (General Counsel), Mike Wallace (Interim Vice President for University Relations and Assistant Vice President for Development), Lulu Santa (Associate Director Campus Ministry), Jake Schneider (Director of Immersions Ignatian Center), and myself (Executive Director Ignatian Center).
In meeting many people who survived the Salvadoran Civil War, we encountered tremendous resilience, from which we have much to learn. In addition we spent quality time with students and staff of the Casa de la Solidaridad program. Although every summer the Ignatian Center sponsors an immersion for faculty and staff, this year it provided an opportunity for the President’s Staff to meet with their counterparts at the University of Central America (UCA) in San Salvador. While there have always been personal relations between individuals at SCU and the UCA, and while the remembrance of the martyrs of UCA remains to this day with the eight crosses in front of the Mission Church, there has been little institutional collaboration. Through two days of meetings, both university administrations explored avenues for mutually beneficial projects. A few concrete proposals were made, and we will follow up in early fall with a video conference with both university administrations to determine next steps.comments powered by Disqus
