Overview:

Purpose:
The Director of the Law Library provides strategic vision, fiscal stewardship, and operational management of the law library, and ensures excellent service to the faculty, students, and staff in the Law School. The Director is a key member of the School of Law's senior leadership team and provides leadership and management to the librarians and staff of the Law Library. The Director of the Law Library reports directly to the Dean of the School of Law.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
- J.D. from an ABA-approved law school and Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program in Library or Information Science;
- At least 7 years of experience in academic law library administration;
- Proven leadership in and an outstanding knowledge of the research, teaching and educational needs of the faculty and student body;
- Thorough understanding of the scope, process, and demands of a twenty-first century law school;
- Experience fostering a collaborative and innovative working environment that encourages collegiality, teamwork, and relationship building both within the Law Library and across the University community;
- Ability to conceive and articulate a vision for the future of library resources and services;
- Customer-oriented approach to working with all law school constituencies to support the teaching, scholarship, and service goals of the law school;
- Intellectual curiosity in and familiarity with new educational technologies;
- Significant administrative, financial, and organizational skills;
Record of accomplishment sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of Librarian in the University's academic staff job categories;
- Understanding of, and ability to work for, the mission and goals of Santa Clara University School of Law.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Innovative Interfaces ILS;
- Experience planning, implementing and maintaining an institutional repository;
- Experience in planning a new library within the context of a new law school complex;
- Classroom teaching experience, for candidates interested in tenure-track rank.
Rank and Salary
Depending upon the qualifications, experience and requirements of the applicant, the appointment will be a tenured, tenure-track, or renewable term (long-term contract) faculty position.
Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Determine and administer library policies and programs to accomplish the Law Library's mission of educating Law School students and supporting Law School faculty in their teaching, scholarship, and service; plan, administer, and manage of all aspects of the Law Library.
- Manage the Law Library in a manner that fulfills the American Bar Association's accreditation standard that requires the Law Library to be an "active and responsive force in the educational life of the law school."
- Oversee an acquisitions budget of approximately $1.5 million. The Law Library includes approximately 400,000 volumes (198,000 print and 207,000 microform volume equivalents) and numerous electronic resources.
- Manage all library personnel, including nine librarians, thirteen full-time staff, and approximately 5 FTE student employees. Direct supervisor of two librarians and one full-time staff.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee Law Library's financial operations; manage Law Library budget;
- Develop and implement a long-range plan for the Law Library; key participant in the School of Law?s strategic planning;
- Hire and make recommendations to Dean and Provost on appointments, promotions, and movement to continuing status of Law Library's academic staff;
- Oversee collection development in digital and print formats;
- Serve as a member of various Law School and University committees, task forces, and other bodies as appropriate;
- Manage the library's physical space;
- Assist the law school enhance the library and information technology environments in a library undergoing a transformation to an information commons of the twenty-first century;
- Provide active and informed participation in the School of Law's planning for information technology.
